Clean And Lube Your Gun, If it Needs it Or Not

This post is a mea culpa. It’s also a post from August that has been sitting in draft for some unknown reason, so here you go:

I’ve carried the same EDC gun during the summer months for about a decade. The routine is come home, place the loaded gun in the holster in my nightstand, lather, rinse, repeat. My weekly (or more) training has been with a full-sized pistol, so I never thought about cleaning the “summer carry” gun.

Last week I went on a short vacation that necessitated putting my summer-carry gun in a car safe that didn’t have room for the holster. So I unloaded. And in doing so I realized that this gun hadn’t seen any oil in a very, very long time. I’m guessing I was carrying a single shot sub-compact, because it was so dry it probably wouldn’t have cycled. Lesson learned, fortunately not the hard way.

Moral of the story: Don’t be an idiot. Clean and lube your gun once in a while, even if you think it doesn’t need it.

And shoot your carry gun regularly, even if it isn’t as fun as your range toys.
