You’ve heard that Red Dot Sights (RDS) are the wave of the future and you need to catch up to the times. So you buy a red dot, mount it on your pistol, and go to the range. You can’t find the dot when you draw. You have to “fish” for the dot and it’s slowing you down. You take the sight off your pistol and sell it. You become a bitter old Fudd that hates the dot.
Those bitter old Fudds will point out that most defensive handgun usages take place at less than 10 yards. That may be true in other places, but in Montana one of our primary defense scenarios is against the four legged predator known as the grizzly bear. Do you really want to wait until that rolling brown ball of hate and destruction is only 10 yards away before you start putting highly accurate shots into the very small zone that will actually make a stop?
The first mistake people make with RDS is that they think they can just pick it up after years of shooting iron sights and everything will be fine. That’s absolutely false. You need some Montana red dot training from an experienced instructor before you can be effective with this tool.
You may be thinking to yourself “I’ll just learn this from YouTube!” That’s not a bad place to start, but you really should take an in person class. There are things that an experienced instructor can point out that will save you weeks of trying to fix it yourself based upon watching videos.
When you go to YouTube, you’ll find thousands of videos on RDS shooting. And yes, as usual on the internet, there’s some pretty bad information out there. I’m going to eliminate hours of frustration for you. Here’s are some queries you can use to find the videos on YouTube that will be a gold mine of training for RDS:
